Dog Art by Stephanie Fitzsimmons

About

I am an Iowa artist who specializes in painting dogs (and sometimes cats). Mainly my paintings are acrylics on canvas. Sometimes I switch it up and work in pencil, ink, colored pencil, watercolor, digitally in Photoshop or Illustrator, or some crazy combination of these. I typically do custom paintings in acrylics on canvas, but if something else in my gallery of work catches your eye, I may be able to fulfill your request. Just ask!

The WOOF Factory is located in my home art studio (aka 3rd bedroom). I work in advertising for a large publisher retouching photos and making ads print ready when I’m not painting dogs. When I’m not working at my job or making art, I’m usually walking, ‘nuggling, or playing with my awesome dogs.

I am a HUGE advocate of adopting dogs from shelters and rescues. If you want to add a dog to your life, I urge you to check out your local shelters & rescues. A good place to start your search is Petfinder.org … you will be amazed by the number of beautiful, loving pets without homes.

I am a BIG fan of pitbulls and they show up frequently in my art. I find their comedic nature and smiling faces terribly hard to resist. I hope I can help put an end to bias, discrimination and misunderstanding.

Forever Loved

The Best Part About Owning A Dog
…is the way he will come over to see me, for no reason, just to let me know I’m important to him
…is the way he is always ready to lick the jelly off my nose
…is the way he looks into my eyes and finds contentment in simply being near me
… is the way he will run all over the yard, fetch a soggy tennis ball and bring it back to me as if to say “look mom, it’s all I have, but it’s yours!”
…is the way he wakes me up in the morning by pushing his cold wet nose in my ear and snuffing loudly
… is the way he shreds toilet paper all over the house, because it’s fun even though he knows he shouldn’t
…is the way he’s sure he can catch the ducks in the lake today
…is the way he comes over to me when he is sad
…is the way he wedges himself near me when I am sad and push all others away, to console me with his love
…is the way he pounces on crickets in the backyard
…is the way he looks perplexed when they escape
…is the way he is terrified of the evil pink hula hoop
…is the way he doesn’t mind how much of that horrid perfume I’m wearing just because it was a gift from my relative who’s visiting
…is the way he doesn’t care about bad hair days or overdue bills
…is the way he loves you, even when you are impatient with him and have no time this morning for a game of tug-a-war
…is the way his coat feels like liquid silk under my fingers
…is the way he finds wisdom beyond words

  1. I am glad to see you promoting petfinder. I found my current pooch on there and my boyfriend found his dog that way as well. I’m always encouraging rescuing shelter dogs. Another good site for people interested in helping animals at no cost to them is the animal rescue site.

Steph, I love your work, and your promotion of adopting/rescuing pets – I have a houseful of rescued pugs/pug mixes, and would never buy from a breeder/puppymiller/store, ever.

I’m in Ames – perhaps I’ll see you and your work at the DSM Farmers Market in the future.

    • Thank you Stacy! My dogs and I frequent the Farmer’s Market but I don’t have my work there yet – but possibly will in the future! Hugs to your houseful of rescued pugs – that’s awesome! : )

  6. Hi there! I just wanted to let you know that your work is amazing!! I am in the process of re-doing my bathroom and I wanted to have some art of my dogs made (2 goldens & one pit bull). How long does it take for you to do the work once you receive the photo?
